Contenu

"Muqam" is a musical dance form for Central Asia, South Asia, West Asia, North Africa and all Islamic people. "Muqam" is a word originated from Arabic. Uygur Muqam, known as the "mother of Uygur music", is originated from folk culture. It is a large-scale dance divertimento form integrating Uygur folk songs, instrumental music, rap, as well as singing and dancing. Compared to other countries’ Muqam, Uyghur Muqam enjoys the largest number of varieties, and a complete art form, so it is well known around the world. In 2005, it was graded as one of the third-batch "Representatives of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. The author of "Maqam: Homeland on the Strings" is Hanzi Yong, who was born in 1962 in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. He has won the "Lu Xun Literature Prize" for the second term. Now, working at the Department of Culture in Xinjiang Autonomous Region, Hanzi Yong is both interested in the culture and art of Xinjiang and adept in their research. This book is the essence of his over ten years of experience and thinking about Muqam, geography and culture in Xinjiang. Different from other academic works about music, it is a book that introduces Muqam and Xinjiang culture to ordinary readers in simple but exquisite words.
